Group stage

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be played from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in Canada, Mexico and the United States. It will be the 23rd edition of the tournament, which was first held in 1930. For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, 48 national teams will compete in the final tournament. Qualification takes place through FIFA’s six continental confederations, while hosts Canada, Mexico and the United States qualify automatically.

The 48 national teams will first compete in the group stage, divided into twelve groups of four teams each. Following the group stage, a total of 32 teams will advance to the knockout stage. As a result, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest World Cup tournament ever held, featuring a total of 104 matches.

From the Group Stage to the Knockout Stage

Groups A through L each consist of four national teams. At the conclusion of the group stage, the top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the knockout stage. In addition, the eight best third-placed teams will also advance to the final rounds.

A total of 32 teams will therefore progress to the knockout stage. For the first time in World Cup history, the knockout phase will begin with a Round of 32. This will be followed by the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, the Third-Place Play-off and ultimately the World Cup Final.

The ranking of the third-placed teams will be determined according to the following criteria, in descending order:

  • Total points earned in all group matches
  • Goal difference in all group matches
  • Total goals scored in all group matches
  • Fair Play ranking
  • Current FIFA World Ranking
  • Previous FIFA World Rankings (if teams are still level)

To determine the final standings within each group, the head-to-head results between teams level on points will be considered first. Only if this does not produce a clear ranking will additional criteria such as goal difference, goals scored and the Fair Play ranking be applied.
