2018 - Football in Europe - Germany vs Netherlands

The Netherlands - Public Viewing 2018

Germany vs. The Netherlands

The second encounter between Germany and The Netherlands in the group stage of League A of the UEFA Nations League will be held in the VELTINS Arena (AufSchalke) on November 19.

Germany’s fifth-largest football venue will host two teams with a long-standing history: the two nations have met on the pitch a total 40 times, with Germany coming in slightly ahead of their neighbors in the statistics. The anticipation of this game will, however, be based much less on historic data than the outcome of the first leg, held on October 13 in Amsterdam, as well as the teams’ performance in the remaining Nations League games. Considering Germany, the team has earned its first positive reports after the group stage elimination in the World Cup, the first in the German national team’s history since the new format was adapted in 1938. A 0:0 draw against world champion France in the Nations League, and a tight but well-earned 2:1 win against Peru in a test match have at least mitigated further criticism. Nevertheless, the good performance remains overshadowed by the aftermath of Özil’s allegations of racism and corruption within the German football association DFB, and the to-be-determined future of coach Löw. While his position was confirmed by officials, a weak performance against the Netherlands is seen by many media outlets as powerful enough to be a decisive factor in his employment status. The Dutch opponent, whose last game was a 2:1 loss against France, has had a turbulent recent past itself. After the historic world cup miss, Holland’s last 6 games resulted in a 2-2-2 statistic. Considering the current states of both teams, it becomes clear: much is at stake for the rivals, a fact that will likely be felt in the game.
